Healthy Eating Doesn’t Have to Be Boring

If you are anything like me then eating “healthy” foods can become a bit of a bore and a chore. The last thing we want right after a stressful day is to munch on a celery stick from the back of the fridge, right?

But our future selves would be thankful if we did nibble our way through said celery stick. And that’s exactly the point, short-term vs long-term-reward. Today, your brain craves the quick dopamine hit, but will that habit serve your future self? The choices we make today can influence how healthy and active we remain in years to come. It sounds drastic but diet really does have life-changing effects on our bodies. Can our diets completely eradicate the chances of us developing diseases or infections? No, but it can drastically influence our risk of developing them. It is one of the many important factors we can control.

During the hotter months of the year here in the northern hemisphere we don’t want to spend centuries sweating over the stove so what can we do to keep our diets healthy?

Let’s first look at positives of making a conscious effort to eat nutritiously. How can a nutritious diet benefit us?

A nutritious diet can:

  • Help your immune system function effectively.
  • Reduce chronic inflammation.
  • Support a healthy gut microbiome, which plays a role in immunity.
  • Lower the risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and some cancers.
  • Improve recovery from illness.

Here are easy 5 ways you can eat nutritiously:

  1. 🥤 Invest in a blender. For me, it’s been one of the best purchases I’ve made. I’m not the biggest fan of endlessly chewing my way through lots of fruit and vegetables, so I blend them into smoothies, soups and sauces instead. It’s quick, convenient, and makes it much easier to fit more produce into my day.
  2. 🥕 Buy seasonal produce. Seasonal fruit and vegetables are often fresher, more flavourful, and can be cheaper because they’re in greater supply.
  3. 🍎 Make simple snack swaps. Instead of reaching for crisps or sweets every time you’re hungry, keep easy alternatives on hand, such as a piece of fruit, a handful of unsalted nuts or seeds, Greek yoghurt, or a protein-rich snack. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated.
  4. 🍽️ Aim for a balanced plate. A simple guide is to fill around half your plate with vegetables or salad, a quarter with wholegrain or other high-fibre carbohydrates, and a quarter with a lean source of protein. Include a small portion of healthy fats, such as olive oil, avocado, nuts or seeds.
  5. 🌈 Eat the rainbow. This isn’t just a catchy phrase. Different coloured fruits and vegetables contain different plant compounds called phytochemicals, each with unique health benefits. Eating a variety of colours throughout the week helps ensure you’re getting a broad range of nutrients and beneficial compounds.

I hope these ideas make healthy eating feel a little less daunting. Remember, eating well isn’t about being perfect—it’s about making small, sustainable choices that add up over time. With summer bringing an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables, there’s no better time to experiment with new flavours and recipes.

Here’s to happy eating and a wonderful summer! ☀️
